Although titanium eliminates chemical corrosion in even the harshest pool water, a small number of heat exchanger failures occur in pool heaters found to have stray low voltage traveling to or from the pool water through the heat exchanger, which would cause corrosion no matter what metal was used.
With the aid of sensitive digital volt meters, field servicemen can actually measure stray voltage between the heat exchanger and the power supply ground wire or local earth grounding rods required for pool equipment bonding. Floating grounds on power supplies, electronic chlorinators and even underwater pool lights can leak harmless low voltage electricity, less than 3 volts, into the pool which force electrolytic corrosion of the heat exchanger in a matter of weeks.
As the drawing shows, Heat Siphon uses a patented design electrically isolated Titanium fitting which seals the hot refrigerant gas inside the metal tube walls using o-rings, and a separate set of non-metallic insulator rings outside the first seal to break the conduction path normally made by the metal tube. Since the heat exchanger housing is connected to PVC schedule 40 piping and the shell is fabricated entirely out of injection molded or extruded PVC plastic, it also provides isolation from any stray voltage.
This proven heat exchanger & fitting design eliminates galvanic corrosion as a source of heat exchanger failure while also making the heat exchanger safer by electrically isolating it from the rest of the Heat Siphon and from your pool water.
There are basically two types of heat exchanger designs in air-to-water (pool heater) heat pumps: Tube-in-tube and tube-in-shell.
From the beginning design, Heat Siphon chose the more costly but much more efficient FULL FLOW tube-in-shell heat exchanger because high volumes of water could flow around the outside of the tube coil with almost no back pressure and required no bypass valve at all. The heat transfer required more tubing and a shell but it eliminates all the extra pool pump watts.
Most other pool heat pumps use the low cost old tube-in-tube design. One long tube is placed inside of another and water flows through the small inside tube (usually 3/4" to 1" in diameter) while the refrigerant gas flows in the space between the two tubes.
It was originally developed for use in low water flow building heating and cooling systems using 5 to 10 gallons per minute. For a pool heater, this design requires most of the 40 to 80 gallons per minute swimming pool pump flow to be by-passed which creates back pressure and loads down the pool pump.
On 1.5 or 2 horsepower pumps this can amount to an additional 10 to 25% more watts consumed just to overcome the spring force in the bypass valve.

| Scroll Compressor |
The
Heart of a Heat Pump
is the compressor, which takes low pressure refrigerant gas and squeezes
it, raising the pressure and temperature in the process. This hot gas
then condenses at the high pressure giving off large amounts of heat for
a relatively small amount of electricity to power the compressor's
motor. The more efficiently the gas is compressed,
the higher the COP of the heat pump.
How a SCROLL COMPRESSOR Works In a Scroll compressor the gas is continuously squeezed and theoretically come close to 100% compression, something a piston compressor can't do because the valves get in the way.
Unlike reciprocating piston compressors with many moving parts, scroll compressors have only two moving parts - one scroll or spiral orbits a matching fixed scroll. The orbiting motion creates a series of gas pockets traveling between the two scrolls. On the outer portion of the scroll the pocket draws in gas, then moves it to center of the scroll where it’s discharged.
The scroll design allows more than one pocket of gas to be compressed at the same time providing a smooth, nearly continuous compression cycle. This enables the scroll compressor to operate more smoothly and quietly, with less vibration. The rating for noise is 3 to 5 decibels less than a piston compressor but our experience indicates for the HEAT SIPHON MODELS overall they are more like 1 to 3 dB quieter. Heat Siphon compressors are quieter than a pool pump.

Digital
All digital models have the Heat Siphon Digital Player Controller Built in offering many additional features and options, a sophisticated problem detection system, a 4 digit LED display and 4 discrete LED lights to provide constant MODE (POOL, SPA or AUTO-PIC) status and feedback. The Digital Display shows water temperature, set point and error codes and alert messages while 4 status LED’s show current operation modes:
DUAL THERMOSTAT for POOL SPA COMBOs - lets you set pool & spa temperature separately and simply select either one by changing the MODE. AUTOMATION SYSTEM READY - Digital Player has an EC MODE (external control) with screw down terminals built in to allow remote ON/OFF switching via hard-wiring to all 3rd party pool/spa controllers. Analog
Analog Models are lower cost & have a single knob, simple 24 volt series control circuit and mechanical thermostat. Many of our customers prefer the simple no nonsense design. POOL SPA COMBO - Analog single thermostat requires manual setting to pool or spa set-point AUTOMATION SYSTEM HOOKUP - Simple series analog 24 volt control circuit allows easy hard-wire hookup to an external controller. Just turn the thermostat up all the way to 10 and let the controller turn it on/off. UPGRADE PATH - DIGITAL PLAYER RETROFIT KIT as an add-on are available to change your ANALOG Heat Siphon to DIGITAL if you later decide to go wireless and will provide ALL PLAYER FEATURES to analog unit |
| How does it work? |
Heat Siphon USES PROVEN SAFE AND DEPENDABLE TECHNOLOGY TO HEAT YOUR POOL OR SPA AT THE LOWEST TOTAL COST POSSIBLE.
Heat Siphon is a stand alone heat pump designed specifically for recreational water heating (in ground, on ground or above ground pools, spas, hot tubs, swim spa's, etc.).
At 1 a unit of electrical energy (you pay for) runs the compressor which sucks evaporating freon gas from the liquid filled evaporator tube. This causes a strong cooling effect (just like sweat evaporates from you skin & cools you off). The gas picks up four units of heat (FREE) from the air flowing over the outside of the evaporator tubes.
At 2 the compressor squeezes this gas, causing its temperature to climb above 200° F (93° C) Result: Five units of heat added to the gas.
At 3 the hot, high pressure gas flows through the inside of the condenser coil. The colder 80° F (26° C) pool water picks up the five units of heat from the freon which cools it down back to a warm liquid.
At 4 the warm liquid is forced through a valve. As it drops in pressure, it rapidly expands and becomes extremely cold liquid .This liquid flows back into the evaporator At 1 where it repeats the cycle.

| Heat Siphon History |
1982 - The first Heat Siphon made was a 3.25HP MODEL with a Piston compressor and the classic Analog 24volt control system. That was in August, 1982. Over 20 years later the Analog Heat Siphon still lives on. During this same year the first digital watch was only 10 years
old when the first Heat Siphon (Analog of course) was made.
Digital was in its infancy - just 12 months before on August 12,
1981 the IBM PC was introduced. The first Heat Siphon also
predates the Apple Macintosh computer which would be introduced
18 months later in the now famous January 1984 Super Bowl
commercial. December 15, 2008, Las Vegas, Nevada: On a 35 degree day, the Heat Siphon unit is icing up but still operating. Notice steam coming out of the pool. These are not conventional results advertised by the manufacturer. Don't try this at home, we just like to test our heat pumps to the limit!
