History of the Water
Heater: Invented by Edwin Ruud
Edwin Ruud is known
as the inventor of the Automatic Water Heater.
Because of his ability to invent and perfect,
his vision, and twenty five years of hard work;
he was able to bring a dependable and convenient
source of hot water to the homes of the world.
The first water heater was manufactured in
1889.
Mr. Ruud, a Norwegian
immigrant, was a mechanical engineer graduate
that landed in New York in 1880 and started
working for Mr. George Westinghouse in the
development of the Westinghouse Gas Engine. It
was around those years that he invented the
first automatic water heater and automatic water
distiller.
Later Mr. Ruud
partnered with James Hay, a progressive plumber
in the Pittsburg area and they proceeded to manufacture
the first water heaters. Two years later,
in 1897, Ruud Manufacturing Company was
incorporated and in 1905 Mr. Ruud left
Westinghouse to completely devote all his time
to his new company.
Today, RUUD operates
two manufacturing facilities in Arkansas and
Georgia - both employing highly trained workers
and state-of-the-art equipment. Over the years,
the product lines have expanded, changed, and
improved significantly as new design techniques
and better manufacturing technologies have
become available.
