September 2007

In late September 2007 we installed an 18 foot round above ground pool in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This pool holds 7,000 gallons of water and is in full sun all day, no trees or shade.  We installed a Heat Siphon 3.25 SX pool
heater with a BTU output of 80,000 along with a Hayward 1/2 horse power water pump/filter combo.  This pump/filter combo
pushes about 45 gallons per minute of water through the Heat Siphon on a scheduled timer which runs from 8am to 7pm daily.
We have the heat pump set to keep the pool at 82 degrees with a solar blanket on it most of the time, especially at night.

The goal of our setup is to see how well the heater works in desert climates with typical low humidity conditions during the
Fall and Winter months in Las Vegas.  From October 1st through mid November, the average daytime high temperatures have
been around 75 to 80 but getting down to 47 to 55 at night.  During the day, with full sun and temperatures 75 + with the heater
running, the pool rises as fast as 2.0 degree per hour.  Part of this temperature rise is due to the sun heating the water with
the solar blanket.  I have found that with just the blanket on the pool, with full sun at 75+, the pool comes up 0.5 a degree per
hour on it's own with no heater.  In the late afternoon, around 3pm when the sun is getting low in the sky, the sun does not have the same
effect on the solar blanket and the pool temperatures stops increasing.   With the heater running at night and the blanket on
the pool, we can get a steady 1.0 to 1.25 degree rise per hour even with air temperatures down to 50 outside.
