We are continuing our “ode to lawn and garden month” in April, with the discussion of pool friendly plants.
Plants can provide beauty and privacy to your pool. Making smart decisions about which plants to include in the beginning, can eliminate frustration later! The trick is to find strong plants that can withstand a pool’s humidity, chlorine and/or salt, but are easy to maintain and still look lush and beautiful.
Use these tips to help you find the best plants to use around swimming pool:
- Choose plants that do not require a lot of watering. Too much water can damage your pool decking or pool equipment.
- Choose plants that do not drop their leaves or other litter often. Frequent hand skimming and filter cleaning can be inconvenient.
- Know what kinds of roots a prospective tree has. Trees with invasive root systems can damage a swimming pool over the years & can lift pool decking
- Try to minimize lawns near swimming pools in order to help alleviate grass clippings from getting into the water.
The right plants for your pool will depend on the area of the country and the world that you live in. Talk to a local gardener or gardening center, to inquire about the best plants to use around your swimming pool!
